Spelling Strategies to Use at Home*
Spelling Scaffolds
Start with a little word like ED- add a letter; like l to make it "led".
Add more letters to make a new word like "ledge".
Keep adding letters (prefixes and suffixes) to make bigger words like: knowledge, acknowledge, acknowledgeable.
Then break it down again, like; know, able, now, no, a.
Challenge someone to see who can make the most words spelling scaffolds from a single beginning word.
Flip Flap Folder
Make two cuts on the front of a standard manila folder to create 3 flaps.
Now you are ready to Look, Say, See, Open Flap 1 - Look at the first word.
Say the first word.
Close all Flaps - See or visualize the word in your head.
Open Flap 2- Open Flaps 1&2- Check your spelling.
Open Flap 3- ReHint: If you turn a plain piece of computer paper sideways
it will fit nicely to create three columns for the flaps and can be changed out weekly
Have-A-Go
Children often know which words are misspelled in a draft.
This strategy helps to develop good spelling habits by using alternative spellings and hunting down the correct spelling.
On a piece of loose leaf Step 1- Circle three words you think you have mispelled in your writing.
Step 2- Have-A-Go at spelling each word again. Concentrate. Close your eyes and try to see
how you think the word looks.
3. Hunt down the correct spelling of each word.
Check your Have-A-Go spelling.
You may ask someone, use a dictionary, use a computer, or ask your parent to help you find the correct spelling.
